Invisalign, what’s all the fuss about?
If you’ve been scanning the market for what’s trending in orthodontics it’s hard to imagine you’ll have missed out on Invisalign in Dorking. Although Invisalign has been available for years it’s seriously taken off in popularity recently, with more and more social media stars flashing their aligners online and expressing their joy at their new super straight smile. So, is Invisalign all that great? And does it work as well as traditional wired braces? We at Old Court House Dental Practice have all the answers.
What is it? How does it work?
Invisalign is a clear tray system. These trays are made by taking images and moulds of your teeth and gums which are then sent off and made into a series of different aligners. These aligners have small changes for each set and it’s these small changes that are moving your teeth into the new preferred position. The idea is that you’ll wear a set for a couple of weeks and then move on to the next. The system works by applying pressure onto the teeth just like wired braces and this pressure pushes the teeth into a new spot.
For some people who are wanting a slightly more advanced move it could be that we use something called Invisalign accessories, which are little clear dots placed on the tooth giving the aligner trays more grip, thus more force meaning better strength of movement. We can even attach elastic bands like wired braces now, which means Invisalign in Dorking is capable of doing so much more than ever before.
What are the benefits?
Unlike other orthodontic options Invisalign is able to be totally removed which means they are really good for cleaning. When patients have wire braces fitted it can be tricky to maintain good oral health and as such the health of their teeth and gums suffer. With fixed braces not being able to floss between teeth correctly can lead to a build-up of plaque and bacteria, which in turn can cause gum disease to develop. However, with Invisalign you can remove the aligners so you’ll still be able to floss as normal.
Using Invisalign in Dorking you’ll likely have a really comfortable experience. There tends to be less irritation with Invisalign than with other systems, as the aligners have a smooth surface resting against the lips, tongue and gums. They also use a light pressure in the way in which they move the teeth, which can also be a major benefit to those with low discomfort thresholds.
Finally and most obviously it is that they are very discreet when you’re wearing them. Invisalign at its core is a system designed to make teeth straightening less of an issue for patients when wearing them. It’s really hard, particularly if you’re an adult wanting to improve your smile, to find an orthodontic treatment that works and also doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable in the board room or at Sunday morning brunch. You can even on very special occasions remove the aligners for a decent period.
